Prepare your garage door for the elements

Every garage door needs some love! Especially before the winter. This way you can prepare it for the cold weather, snow, rain and more. Your door is a large surface that is exposed to the harsh conditions outside. The cold weather can put additional strain on the door that can lead to a malfunction. There are some easy steps you can do each fall season, so you can keep your garage door in perfect working condition.

Lubrication

The first thing is to lubricate the moving parts of your garage door. The cold weather can make your garage door parts stiffen and prevent them from opening and closing correctly. This may further lead to breaking. By lubricating all those moving parts, they will move with less friction and thus the chance of breaking is significantly lower. If you are not sure what to lubricate get in touch with us and we will be happy to advise you.

Clean sensors

Your door sensors are an important part of your garage door. You need to check and clean them regularly. Especially after heavy rain or “muddy” weather. Things like dirt or snow can obstruct the sensors, and regular cleaning will help ensure your door is opening and closing safely. Those sensors are the ones responsible for the door not closing if you have something in the way. They are pretty important if you have small children who are playing around the garage or your dog constantly running around. This way you can avoid accidents.

Cleaning

I know it’s obvious but from our experience, many people forget to clean their door surface. Yeah, maybe the rain will clean some of the dirt but dirt, moisture and even salt from the road can damage the surface of your door over time. That is why a simple piece of advice from us is to clean it regularly with a microfibre cloth and soapy water.

Weather stripping

Check the weather stripping of your door. If it’s old and especially if it is not sealing you should change it. Especially before the weather gets worse. This way you will prevent moisture from getting in and even developing mold because of it.

The most important thing to note is that you need to examine your door regularly and mainly before the rainy season and winter. This way you will be able to preserve it in the best way possible and enjoy a comfortable experience.
